“Roll D8 for Initiative” — On Second-Person Narration in Tabletop Narrative Role-Playing Games

The aim of the article is to present phenomenon using second-person narrative in tabletop role-playing games. Despite its ambiguous status literary projects, dyadic basic component pen-and-paper RPGs. In introduction, author briefly introduces specificity text-based games and history their creation. Then most popular systems, such as Dungeons & Dragons or Vampire: The Masquerade, were characterized, well examples created Poland. To illustrate phenomenon, official manuals, recordings sessions Polish artists published on YouTube used. When discussing narration, draws attention occurrence guides statements player functioning Game Master. Master a specific narrator heroes’ adventures, who his action smoothly moves between different types narratives (first, second third person): he describes scenery actions NPCs creatures, constructs characters not guided by other participants session, but also comments commands player-created heroes. It precisely this last type activity that extremely important. Master, it manifests itself primarily commentary characters, continuation plot after players, when consulting further actions, serves technical communication related mechanics throwing polyhedral dice. use RPGs contributes increasing immersion, involvement, sense interactivity players.
